LeBron James has scored the most points in NBA history, and it seems he will not stop anytime soon. Despite his achievements, he only won one scoring title in the 2007/08 season. It is surprising, considering how prolific he is as an offensive player.
James did not get multiple scoring titles like some of his fierce rivals, including Kevin Durant, who has four scoring titles, or Stephen Curry with two. However, he has always been among the top five scorers in the league, which he has done 12 times in his storied career.
“If it happens, it happens. It is not important to me at all. Right now, our team is in a position to clinch (home-court advantage) for the whole Playoffs, and that is more important,” LeBron said in 2010. “If I really wanted to, if I really wanted to win the scoring title, I could win it every single year. Every single year, I could really do it. But it doesn’t matter to me.”
LeBron has always considered himself a pass-first guy
Even if he is one of the best scorers in NBA history, Bron still sees himself as a pass-first guy. That might sound wild, but he plays the game “the right way.” He’s always looking for the best shot possible from him or a teammate. Being more of a playmaker doesn’t mean he wants to see people discredit his scoring ability.
It’s also why he gets criticized during the clutch moments; people perceive that he doesn’t take charge in clutch situations when a close game is on the line. That is also a misguided take, considering Bron has one of the most extensive clutch highlight reels ever.
James is a historical scorer, especially when you look at how many seasons he has been a top-tier offensive player. He has scored 25+ points per game for 20 straight seasons, with only Durant close to him with 15. For a pass-first guy to do this is an absurd achievement because it won’t get replicated anytime soon.
Team success matters more to LeBron
Individual achievements are a pleasant addition to everything Bron achieved with all the teams he played for. He has always prioritized team success over everything else, leading to making the right play whenever he can.
Of course, there are times when he has to put the team on his shoulders, but he’s still focused on getting the victory for the team by being productive in every facet of the game. King James understands his role is not just playing as a scorer, as he has a multi-dimensional game.
“My job is to do a lot of everything — rebounding, passing, and defending so that takes away from my scoring. I’ve done (the scoring title) before. I’m capable of doing it, but my game sometimes doesn’t allow me to have those big nights,” James said in 2012.
