Amidst much noise, the Golden State Warriors moved past the trade deadline quietly. With Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson being the trade assets for the Dubs, everyone had hoped for at least one move. Alas, nothing of the sort happened. The Warriors’ front office deemed that their current roster had the necessary skill set to keep them as contenders.
And Wiggs has been doing good these past few days. Klay, for his part, has shown much emotional maturity and adjustment in his pursuit of finishing his NBA career as a Warrior. Although nothing is set in stone, basketball pundits are adamant about two scenarios for Klay Thompson – retiring or extending his contract. And it looks like Stephen Curry could be the saving grace of his Splash Brother’s continued stay.
Stephen Curry opens up about his wish for the Dubs Big 3
San Francisco’s very own radio station, 95.7 The Game listens to Curry’s wish about keeping the Big 3 together. “I think the way that we talk about it, you want to not only end our career as a Warrior, not only continue to compete at a very high level, but you want to end it the right way,” he said.
From Draymond Green‘s shenanigans throughout the season to inconsistent performances from the team’s best players, it was hard to look at the Dubs as the dynasty that Curry-Thompson-Green shaped it into. But even during such uncertain times, the Warriors younger guys shone like a beacon of hope. Led by the “Point God,” Chris Paul himself, the bench unit has, on several occassions rose up to tackle the cul-de-sac the veterans often put the team in.
Hence, it was no wonder when Steve Kerr decided to bench Klay for the first time in 12 years. The Dubs coach, had initially decided to not let the 4x champion close the game. And more recently, Kerr felt it would be right to let Thompson start off the bench. Even though Klay posted his best performance of the season that night, it is not enough to change his fate just about now.
The Warriors find themselves in a dilemma regarding Klay Thompson
According to ESPN’s cap and contract expert, Bobby Marks, Thompson’s market value isn’t exactly the most promising. The financial aspect would look to be between a $25 to $30 million range while the number of years would most probably not go longer than two or three years. And that’s solely due to his health concerns.
Marks also opined that the Warriors are in a proper dilemma as they will have to choose between Wiggins, who has been posting consistent numbers, and Thompson, who seems to have embraced the bench position pretty well. Add the positive remarks he’s made about his new role and the mindset, it seems like Klay Thompson is ready to do anything his team wants of him.
Will the Warriors adhere to Stephen Curry’s desire and keep Klay Thompson? Or will there be some major changes in the team come off season? Let us know what you think!
