Dallas Cowboys restructure Dak Prescott’s $60 million contract for 2024.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the team has converted Prescott’s $5 million roster bonus to a signing bonus to create cap space. The move also involved adding void years to Prescott’s contract, resulting in $4 million in cap space for the current season.

Prescott’s cap number for the 2024 season is now $55.455 million, and the void years mean the Cowboys will continue to carry him on their cap even if he moves on after the 2024 season.

Dallas Cowboys’ Cap Room

Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys, is in cap limbo for 2024. As he tries to maneuver slowly to create more space, it isn’t enough to make any splash moves in free agency. Even this move with Dak’s contract is a tiny bit of what really needs to happen.

Gridiron Heroics wrote about the Dallas Cowboys’ awful cap situation. They have the least amount of cap space heading into 2024 and have only made two real roster additions this far into free agency.

“The big news from this free agency isn’t just the lack of moves made; it is the amount of cap space available to try and make moves. According to Spotrack.com, an updated list shows that the Cowboys ranked 32nd in available cap space at $4.06 million. They are still over the cap by $2.4 million.”

Dak’s Future

A long-term deal could still be in the works. Restructuring and extending Dak would be among the few moves to create real financial space in Dallas.

According to NBC Sports, an extension would mean that Prescott would be on the roster while counting against the cap. The contract restructuring doesn’t preclude such a deal from coming together at some point this offseason, but it remains to be seen if there will be action to go with the talk about a new deal in Dallas.

Dak Prescott is 2-5 in the playoffs. His most recent loss upset the Green Bay Packers in Dallas. The thought of maneuvering Dak’s contract down the line and committing to him longer than 2025 (his current standing) is a tough decision to make.

Dak has been questioned as a quarterback who could lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. The contract situation makes the conversation even more prevalent.
