Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal discuss the pressure of the play-in tournament

The Phoenix Suns find themselves in a precarious position as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season, with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

Despite starting the season with high expectations fueled by the acquisition of Bradley Beal to form a potent trio alongside stars Kevin Durant and others, the Suns have encountered unexpected challenges along the way.

Following a disappointing loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, a team now sharing an identical record with the Suns, Durant and Beal expressed the mounting pressure and heightened stakes facing the Suns.

“It’s hard not to look at [the standings],” Suns forward Kevin Durant said after the 113-105 loss to NOLA. “…Every game is important to everybody now, it is do or die for everybody at this time. Watching, or spectating, it’s hard not to see it.”

Durant acknowledged the difficulty of avoiding the standings, recognizing the intensity and significance of every remaining game in the tight playoff race.

“It is a little nerve-wracking, but it is just another game,” Beal said. “You show up and if it’s a double elimination or single elimination, we have to make it work.”

Beal echoed Durant’s sentiments, admitting to feeling the nerves associated with the team’s precarious position but emphasizing the need for focus and determination in approaching each game, regardless of the playoff implications.

“We just have to go out there and compete and take it one game and one day at a time and get better every day,” said Beal. “We have a playoff series coming up and if we are not locked in, it can get really ugly for us. We have a tough team [the Clippers] Tuesday. We just have to get ready to go.”

However, despite the star power and expectations surrounding the Suns’ “Big Three,” questions have arisen about their consistency and depth.

NBA analyst Bill Simmons recently cast doubt on labeling the Suns’ trio as a true “Big Three,” citing Beal’s struggles this season and raising concerns about the team’s overall depth and ability to sustain success in the postseason.

“The word big three has been thrown around just way too liberally over the past twelve years,” Simmons said on The Bill Simmons Show. “That is not a big three, Beal does not deserve big three status the way he’s played this year. I think he’s at a different point in his career, I just haven’t been that impressed,” Simmons said on the April 8 edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast.

With challenging matchups against formidable opponents like the Los Angeles Clippers on the horizon, the Suns understand the urgency of regaining their momentum and solidifying their playoff position.

As they navigate this critical juncture of the season, every game becomes a pivotal opportunity for the Suns to prove their resilience and competitiveness as they strive to secure their place in the postseason.
