RUMOR MILL: Belichick Eyes Cowboys Coaching Job, Fans Stirred Up

Could Bill Belichick Be Eyeing the Dallas Cowboys Coaching Position?

Bill Belichick’s attempt to secure a head coaching role for the 2024 NFL season ended in disappointment, with the Atlanta Falcons opting for Raheem Morris over the former New England Patriots mastermind. According to an ESPN report, Belichick’s job search, which will take a hiatus as he joins Omaha Productions—Peyton Manning’s media company—for a season, could see him targeting a return in 2025, potentially aiming for a role with one of three teams in the same division. Among those, the Dallas Cowboys stand out as a notable possibility.

The idea of Belichick taking over in Dallas has sparked considerable debate among NFL fans. While some express concern over Belichick’s dominant personality clashing with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, others see it as a match made in football heaven. Social media reactions range from skepticism to excitement, with one fan speculating, “Said it before… he’s coaching the Cowboys next year…” Another pointed out, “The way he talked on the McAfee show basically laid out Dallas situation and draft pick basically drafting for him next year,” indicating a possible strategic fit.

Despite these rumors, Jerry Jones has publicly committed to Mike McCarthy as the Cowboys’ head coach for the upcoming season, even after a disappointing loss in the Wild Card Round against the Green Bay Packers. This comes amidst speculation on whether Patriots owner Robert Kraft played a role in derailing Belichick’s recent job opportunities.

Belichick’s 2024 job hunt was reportedly influenced by Kraft’s interventions, especially with the Washington Commanders—a team that had shown interest due to Belichick’s connection to Maryland and an endorsement from minority owner Magic Johnson. However, the team’s preference for a strong general manager role, a vision shared by new hire Adam Peters, left Belichick out in the cold.

The Falcons emerged as the last viable option until it was revealed that Kraft had allegedly cautioned Falcons owner Arthur Blank against hiring Belichick. This claim has been disputed by Patriots spokesperson Stacey James, who insists Kraft supported Belichick’s candidacy for the Atlanta job. Critics, including Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel, have lambasted Kraft for not standing by Belichick, arguing that his actions betrayed a lack of loyalty to the coach who significantly contributed to the Patriots’ success.

As Belichick plans a year of travel, engagements with football programs, and writing a book on football leadership, the NFL community is left pondering what the future holds for one of its most storied coaches. Could Belichick’s path lead him to Dallas, or is the NFL witnessing the end of an era? Only time will tell.
