In a heartfelt farewell, former NFL quarterback Tom Brady lauded former colleague Matthew Slater for his “perfect career” after the latter just announced his retirement.
Over the course of their twelve years together with the New England Patriots, Brady and Slater experienced several victories, including three Suρer Bowl crowns. Brady declared: “A real winner. An even greater guy and the greatest teammate. Greetings on your ideal career.”
Slater gained notoriety for his extraordinary abilities in a different position even though he was first selected as a wide receiver. He was also well-known for amassing a large number of special teams tackles, which cemented his reputation as maybe the greatest gunner in NFL history.
Throughout his 16-year career, Slater was recognized for his noteworthy achievements with several awards, including being named a 10-time Pro Bowler and a five-time first-team All-Pro.
Slater’s retirement also comes at a time when the Patriots are going through a transition, with Jerod Mayo replacing Bill Belichick as head coach. Slater’s exit from the squad will surely have an ongoing effect since he was a member for such a long time.
Slater said in his farewell letter, “I have done all within my power to honor and appreciate the game. I will always be in love with the game, even if it is time for our relationship to change. I was a young guy with goals and aspirations when I got here in 2008. I will be able to retire in 2024 with the knowledge that this experience has surpassed all of my expectations.”
Belichick declared Slater the greatest special teams player of all time last year, stating, “I’ve been very fortunate.” I consider myself to have taught the finest оffensive player in football—Tom Brady—the best defensive player in football—LT Taylor—and the best player on special teams in football—Matt Slater.”
After their incredible tenure with the club, it’s assumed that Slater’s No. 18 jersey will be permanently hаnging up, much like Brady’s 12 and Gronkowski’s 87. Under Belichick’s direction, the Patriots earned six Suρer Bowl championships; Slater was able to raise the trophy in 2015, 2017, and 2019. The first victory was particularly satisfying since it put an end to a ten-year quest for the top spot.
